Here Is What You Will Need: |
- A fine point soldering iron ($8 - RadioShack part number: 64-2051) - Solder (can be found at RadioShack for around $4) - De-soldering braid ($3 - RadioShack part number: 64-2090) - Phillips head screw driver - Tweezers |
The first thing you will want to do is to disconnect the battery and wait 5 minutes before starting. This is for your safety so the air bag does not accidentally deploy while working on/near the steering column. Also never mess with any yellow connectors that you may find on/near the steering column, these are part of the air bag system.
Now take the bottom half of the steering column cover off by removing 3 screws. It may require some finesse to get it off.
Once the bottom half is removed, you can remove the top half.
Now you will have to find the 4 screws that hold the plastic piece that goes around the metal keyhole. Some of the screws will be hard to get to and a longer screwdriver may make it easier to get to some of them.
Once you get the plastic piece free, open it up to reveal the circuit board. The blue arrow in the picture is pointing to the LED that will need to be un-soldered.
Before you remove the stock LED, take note of where the anode mark is. The anode mark will be a notch on the corner of the LED similar to this picture.
Use some de-soldering braid to remove the stock LED, and then note the cathode mark on the replacement LED. The cathode mark is either a line or a dot that is next to the lens similar to this picture.
Solder the replacement LED so the cathode mark on the other side of the stock LEDs anode mark. For example.. If the stock LEDs anode mark is up, then install the replacement LED with the cathode mark down.
Next plug the plastic piece back in and close your doors and then open your drivers side door. The LED should light up.
Put everything back together in the reverse order that you took it apart.
